GUILFORD WOMEN WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/29/00) --  Sophomore forward Megan Barlow (Chevy Chase, MD/Whitman) scored 15 second-half points and junior Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) added a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds as Guilford defeated visiting Washington and Lee, 70-55, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action Saturday. The victory extended the Quakers' (11-4, 8-3 ODAC) winning streak to six games, the program's longest since a school-record 14-game skein during the 1997-98 season.

Washington and Lee (9-7, 6-6 ODAC) shot over 52 percent from the floor in the first half and held a 33-30 halftime lead. An early second-half jumper by Miller marked the game's seventh and final lead change, but the Generals stayed within three points of Guilford until the 7:10 mark of the second half. At that point, the Quakers embarked on a 10-0 run that included six points from three Washington and Lee turnovers. Junior Marlo Biernacki's (Alden, NY/Akron Central) 18-foot jumper with 4:53 left capped the spurt and gave the hosts an insurmountable 61-48 lead with 4:53 remaining. The Generals drew no closer than 10 points for the rest of the game.

Barlow finished with 16 points for Guilford, while Biernacki hit for 12 markers and sophomore Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) added 11 points. Junior guard Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) totaled seven points, seven rebounds and a game-high five steals off the bench. Guilford forced 29 Generals' turnovers, which led to 36 Quakers' points. Washington and Lee converted 20 Guilford miscues into 11 points.

Sophomore forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) led the Generals with 16 points, while classmate Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) and senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) tallied 11 points apiece. Babst added a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Quakers won both regular-season games with the Generals and hold a 12-1 edge in the all-time season series.

Guilford hosts league-rival Roanoke Wednesday night (2/2) at 7:00, while Washington and Lee returns to the hardwood Tuesday (2/1) evening against Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lexington.
