
MILLER, BIERNACKI LIFT GUILFORD WOMEN TO THIRD STRAIGHT WIN
Greensboro, NC (01/17/00) -- Guilford junior Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) totaled 20 points and 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year and classmate Marlo Biernacki (Alden, NY/Akron Central) added a career-high 19 points and 12 boards as the host Quakers cruised to an 80-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Virginia Wesleyan Monday night. The victory extends Guilford's winning streak to three and snaps a four-game Marlins' win streak.
After the Marlins (6-7, 5-5 ODAC) scored the game's first five points, Guilford (8-4, 5-3 ODAC) used a 15-5 run over the next six minutes to open a 10-point spread, on the way to a 37-22 halftime advantage. The Quakers held Virginia Wesleyan to 24 percent field-goal shooting in the opening period, including a three-for-15 effort from three-point range. Miller had half of her points and rebounds the first half, while Biernacki had nine points and six boards at the break.
Senior guard Nancy Mattox (Glen Allen, VA/Hermitage), Virginia Wesleyan's second-leading scorer, scored her first points of the game with a half-opening three-pointer to pull the Marlins to within 12 points, 37-25. The guests drew no closer as Guilford shot better than 56 percent from the floor in the second period and slowly increased its lead to as many as 30 points. Virginia Wesleyan, which entered the game second to Guilford among ODAC scoring leaders, shot 33 percent from the floor in the second half and finished with its lowest scoring output of the season, 21 points below its season average.
Sophomore forward Megan Barlow (Chevy Chase, MD/Whitman) added 14 points and eight rebounds for Guilford, while classmate Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) enjoyed a solid all-around night with nine points, eight rebounds, and a game- and career-high seven assists. Junior forward Kristen Leake (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) led the Marlins with 10 points and six rebounds.
The victory snaps Virginia Wesleyan's three-game winning streak against Guilford and gives the Quakers' a 10-9 lead in the season series.
Guilford plays the second of four straight home games this Thursday night (1/20) against league-rival Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m., while the Marlins host Mary Washington in a nonconference matchup Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. in Cunningham Gym.
