Like their male counterparts, the womens
lacrosse squad had a youthful look in 1998 with two seniors (Nikki Fields and Katie
Medori) surrounded by 10 first-year players. The younger players played like veterans
in the first nine games of the season as the Quakers posted six wins, including triumphs
over Division I foes Howard and Mercyhurst.
The schedule became more difficult late in the season as Coach Ken Glardons club dropped its final six games, five of which were on the road. Roanoke ended the Quakers year with a 21-12 win in the ODAC quarterfinals.
Defenders Tina Schroeter '99 and Jess Phillips '01 each earned second team All-ODAC recognition. While listed as a defender, Schroeters speed and ball-handling skills made her an asset in many positions. She filled in admirably on the attack when needed and scored a career-best 28 goals, the third-highest total on the team. Phillips developed into a top defender and received the teams Best Team Player award. Her 51 ground balls ranked third on the club behind Schroeter (68) and Carmen Eckman '99 (58).
