OHIO WESLEYAN OPENS WOMEN'S LACROSSE
SEASON WITH 12-7 WIN AT GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (03/14/02) --
Visiting Ohio Wesleyan scored the game's first five goals and held off
Guilford's rally for a 12-7 women's lacrosse win in its season opener Thursday
at Haworth Field. Four players scored three goals apiece for the Battling
Bishops (1-0), including rookie attackers Lila Barzegar (Aurora, CO/Smoky
Hill) and Ashley Beam (Wooster, OH/Wooster), who also added assists.
Beam started the scoring in the first minute
with her first college goal off sharp pass from classmate Courtland Smith
(Easton, MD/Canterbury (CT)). Junior
midfielder Amanda McDermott (Wayne, PA/Episcopal Academy), Ohio
Wesleyan's top returning scorer, drove to the cage and scored less than two
minutes later for a 2-0 Battling Bishops' lead. After back-to-back tallies by sophomore attack Alexa Laub
(Akron, OH/Stow Walsh Jesuit), Barzegar capped the 5-0 game-opening
run with her first college goal.
Guilford answered with three straight scores,
two by sophomore attack Kathryn Ragin (Pawleys Island, SC/Hyde School (CT)),
that trimmed the deficit to 5-3. The
Quakers never drew closer as Beam added two more scores in the final nine
minutes of the opening period and helped Ohio Wesleyan to an 8-5 halftime lead.
After a McDermott goal opened the
second-half scoring, Guilford pulled to within 9-7 with 13:53 left in the game
on consecutive tallies by Ragin and rookie attack Sarah Routhier
(North Yarmouth, ME/Greely). Laub
halted the comeback with her third goal of the game at the 9:11 mark, which
triggered a 3-0 game-ending run.
Freshman goaltender Lindsey Kennedy
(Liverpool. NY/Liverpool) made 20 stops for the Quakers, her fifth game with
at least 20 saves this year. Senior
Jody Dickerson (Dublin, OH/Coffman) went the distance in goal for the
Battling Bishops and made eight saves.
Guilford hosts Sweet Briar next Tuesday
(3/19) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest, while Ohio Wesleyan
concludes a season-opening trip to North Carolina at Greensboro College Saturday
(3/16).
