Now in his 10th season on the Guilford sidelines, Chuck
McCracken owns a 120-135 career coaching record - the second-best mark in school
history. His teams have nearly rewritten the school's volleyball record book and nine
McCracken-coached players received All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
commendation in his tenure.
McCracken assisted longtime Quakers' coach Gayle Currie in 1990 and 1991. He became the program's second head coach in 1992 when Currie took over the school's athletic director duties. The Quakers went 51-11 in McCracken's first two seasons, and just missed an NCAA playoff berth in 1992. Guilford gained the national tournament a year later after he led the Quakers to their first ODAC title. Brenda Davis '94 captured the program's only ODAC Player of the Year Award in 1993 and McCracken received the league's Coach of the Year prize.
In addition to collegiate coaching, McCracken has extensive experience directing Junior Olympic and USA Volleyball programs. Several of his boys and girls teams have placed highly at state and national tournaments. In November 1996, he served on a select panel of national volleyball coaches at a U.S. Olympic Training meeting in Colorado Springs, CO. The group established skill-development strategies for USA Volleyball programs from youth leagues to elite national teams.
McCracken has Level II certification from the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program, the American Sport Education Program and the National Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He is certified as an official by USA Volleyball at the junior national level and by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) at the state level. McCracken coached Guilford's women's tennis team from 1994-1999.
McCracken serves as the Commissioner for the Carolina Region of USA Volleyball and as the Vice Chair of the North Carolina Volleyball Officials Board. He is a member of the USA Volleyball Rules of the Game Commission and works with the tournament staff at the United States Junior Olympic National Volleyball Championships.
McCracken earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Earlham College in 1977. He helped the school's volleyball team to a fourth-place finish in the 1977 NAIA National Tournament. McCracken attended the Olney Friends Boarding School in Ohio where he lettered in soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball and tennis.
McCracken lives in nearby Stokesdale, NC, with his wife, Debbie. Two of his four children (Heather '00 and Jason '02) have attended Guilford.
