GUILFORD TIES LINCOLN MEMORIAL, 1-1, IN MEN'S SOCCER
Greensboro, NC (09/10/00) Freshman midfielder Scott Day (Centerville, OH) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Edmond Bogonko (Nairobi, Kenya) with 6:44 left in the game to help Division II Lincoln Memorial (1-4-1) salvage a 1-1 tie at Guilford Sunday afternoon. The goal ended the Quakers' scoreless streak at 299 minutes at 31 seconds, a span of four games.
Guilford freshman Jason Varney (Youngsville, NC/Wake Forest-Rolesville) put the Quakers (2-1-1) on the board in the opening half with his first college goal. Guilford sophomore Steve Harrison (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) sent a cross in front of the goal where Lincoln Memorial's junior goalkeeper Ben Madsen (Mt. Horeb, WI) and Varney both jumped to play it. The ball hit off the back of Varney's head and slowly bounced into the goal giving the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Varney was ejected later in the first half after picking up a second yellow card, which left the Quakers down a man until Day picked up a second yellow in the 86th minute.
As time dwindled down, Lincoln Memorial answered in the 82nd minute when Day received a pass from at the top of the box, sidestepped Guilford's sweeper Brandon Costilow's (Birmingham, AL/Vestavia Hills) slide tackle, dribbled in and put the ball in the goal.
Both teams had chances in overtime to score but neither team got a clean shot on goal.
