GUILFORD SHUTS OUT EMORY & HENRY 3-0 TO WIN FIRST ODAC GAME

Greensboro, NC (09/09/00) — Rookie forward Karl Smith (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) scored a goal and an assist in Guilford's 3-0 win over Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.

The game remained scoreless until an Emory & Henry defender pulled down junior midfielder Noam Sorek (Atlit, Israel/Ort Hiriat Bialik) in the box. Sorek converted the penalty kick in the 64th minute to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Sorek's shot traveled over the Wasps' diving junior goalkeeper, Josh Hale (Penhook, VA/Franklin County), and hit the upper right corner of the goal.

Guilford scored again in the 79th minute to make the game 2-0 when Smith crossed a ball from the far end of the box to sophomore Steve Harrison (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville). As an Emory & Henry defender slid to break up the pass, Harrison controlled the bouncing ball, turned and scored his first goal of the year. About three minutes later Smith scored his first collegiate goal to seal the win.

Guilford freshman goaltender Ryan Fitzgibbons (Dayville, CT/Killingly) recorded two saves in his second straight shutout.
