QUAKERS UPSET NATIONALLY RANKED VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 2-1

(9/18/99) Guilford College senior Jon Baker (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) converted a pass from sophomore forward Ray King (Trenton, NJ/Pennington School) seven minutes into overtime to lift visiting Guilford to a 2-1 upset men's soccer win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan Saturday. The Marlins entered the contest ranked 16th in the September 13 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III National Rankings and second in the South Region.The victory marked Guilford's (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) second straight win and its first over Virginia Wesleyan (3-2, 0-1) in the last eight meetings (0-7-1), dating to 1991.
The Marlins scored first on a tally by freshman Josh Nolz (Onancock, VA/Nandua) in the 22nd minute off an assist by senior midfielder Ryan Molloy (Glen Allen, VA/Hermitage). Virginia Wesleyan held a 1-0 halftime lead before Guilford freshman midfielder Noam Sorek (Atlit, Israel/Ort Hiriat Bialik) netted his second goal of the year in as many games in the 66th minute to knot the score at 1-1.
Guilford freshman goalkeeper John Watson (New Bern, NC/New Bern) made 10 saves in helping the Quakers to their first two-game winning streak since 1994.
