NEVILLE LIFTS GUILFORD TO MEN'S SOCCER WIN IN OVERTIME
Greensboro, NC (10/24/99) Senior Dan Neville (Absecon, NJ/Absegami) scored less than two minutes into the second sudden-death overtime period to give Guilford a 3-2 men's soccer win over visiting St. Mary's (MD) Sunday afternoon. Neville netted the game-winner from about 16 yards out after taking a long, looping lead pass from sophomore back Brandon Costilow (Birmingham, AL/Vestavia Hills) just outside the Seahawks' 18-yard line and dodging two defenders.
The Seahawks (7-9) nearly won the game in the 99th minute when freshman forward Nick Keng (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) hit the lower right post from close range following a scramble in front of Guilford's net.
Guilford (8-8) rallied from two one-goal deficits during an 11-minute stretch of the second half and forced overtime with 18:01 left in regulation when senior midfielder Dax Baker (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) punched home a short pass from Costilow after a scramble in front of the Seahawks' net off of a Guilford corner kick.
Keng came off the bench and broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute with an easy goal from close range. Sophomore Ryan Olsen (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) crossed the ball to the far post from the right sideline where freshman midfielder Bill Mooney (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) tried to volley it past Guilford goalie John Watson (New Bern, NC/New Bern), but instead tipped it to a wide-open Keng who drove it home.
The Quakers answered just under seven minutes later when sophomore Ray King (Trenton, NJ/Pennington School) beat a handful of St. Mary's defenders along the end line before sliding it by Seahawks netminder Micah Spiegel (Silver Spring, MD/Montgomery Blair).
Keng set up the game's third goal in the 70th minute with a nice cross to sophomore midfielder Daniel Oldham (Gaithersburg, MD/Watkins Mill) who made a nice run and put the ball past Watson from eight feet out.
The win avenges Guilford's 3-2 overtime loss to St. Mary's in 1998 and give the Quakers a 3-0 record in overtime games this season.
