GUILFORD MEN'S SOCCER DROPS ODAC QUARTERFINAL, 3-1
Hampden-Sydney, VA (11/03/99) — Second-seeded Hampden-Sydney rallied from a 1-0 haltime deficit to score a 3-1 victory over seventh-seeded Guilford in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Tournament Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers advance to Friday's semifinals.
The Quakers scored first in the 27th minute when freshman back Steve Harrison (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) lined a towering sideline throw from freshman back Damien Levy (East Windsor, NJ/Peddie School) into the back of the net.
Hampden-Sydney answered 15 minutes into the second half when Josh Dickens (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) scored off of a corner kick. The kick was originally from Chad Pilcher (Woodstock, GA/Sequoyah) and was deflected to Dickens by Rob Comegys (Stafford, VA/North Stafford), who picked up the second assist.
The winning goal was scored less than 15 minutes later when Trey Cooper (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Collegiate) scored from 10 yards back, off of an assist from Landon Moore (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry), putting the Tigers up 2-1.
Rob Comegys gave the Tigers a cushion with eight and a half minutes left to play, as he landed a 15 yard shot from Tony Mulvihil (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville), giving Hampden-Sydney a 3-1 lead.
Freshman goalie John Watson (New Bern, NC/New Bern) went the distance for the Quakers, picking up eight saves in his first collegiate post-season play
. Guilford played the match without senior midfielder Dax Baker (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley), a three-time All-ODAC pick and Guilford's third-leading scorer, after he received a red card in Monday's regular-season finale at Averett.Guilford concluded the season with nine overall wins, its most in a campaign since 1986.
