GUILFORD RALLIES FOR OVERTIME MEN'S HOOPS WIN OVER LYNCHBURG

Greensboro, NC (12/02/98) -- Sophomore center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) scored seven of his 13 points in overtime to lift Guilford (1-3, 1-1 ODAC) to an 80-77 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Lynchburg (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) Wednesday night. The Quakers overcame a 14-point second-half deficit and 30 turnovers to record their first win of the season.

Guilford opened a four-point lead (75-71) with 2:28 left in overtime on Ashworth's third tip-in basket of the period, but Lynchburg battled back and took a 77-76 edge with 1:00 left on junior Kurt Reighard's (Altavista, VA/Altavista) fourth three-pointer of the night. The Quakers regained the lead on a Jeff Heybruck (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) layup with 34 seconds left and iced the game with free throws from Ashworth and sophomore Jaron Randall (Trenton, NJ/Princeton Day School) in the contest's final 24 seconds. A three-point attempt by Lynchburg's Jerry O'Hara (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) from 30 feet out hit off the back of the rim as time expired.

Guilford trailed 54-40 with 11:50 to play in regulation, but rallied with a 19-4 run over the next 5:29. Sophomore Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) scored seven of his game-high 21 points during that stretch and his layup gave the Quakers a 59-58 lead with 6:21 remaining.

Lynchburg answered with a Matt Long (New Concord, OH/John Glenn) three-pointer, the Hornets' eighth of 11 trifectas on the night, to regain a 61-59 edge with 5:27 left. The Hornets' lead swelled to four with 1:52 remaining before Guilford scored four points in 16 seconds to tie the game at 67 for the seventh time on two Evans free throws with 1:08 to play. Neither team scored in the remaining regulation time.

Evans recorded his third double-double of the year with his season-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. Ashworth finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) hit for 16 points. Heybruck finished with 11 points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes in his 1998-99 debut. Guilford owned a 44-24 rebounding advantage on the night, including 17 caroms off the offensive glass.

Lynchburg sophomore Mike Desmond (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) shared game-high scoring honors with Evans by scoring 21 points, including five three-pointers. Reighard finished with 18 points and junior Chris Whelan (Great Falls, VA/Herndon) scored 13 points.

The Quakers visit ODAC rival Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon while the Hornets host nationally-ranked and preseason league favorite Hampden-Sydney Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
