Greensboro, NC (2/06/99) -- Guilford College's women's basketball team overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to post an 83-70 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over host Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon. The Quakers' men fell for the ninth consecutive game as host Virginia Wesleyan shot nearly 55 percent from the floor in an 87-63 ODAC victory in Norfolk, VA.

In the women's game, Guilford sophomore Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to help the Quakers avenge a 63-61 home loss to Washington and Lee January 30. The Generals held a 37-29 halftime lead and expanded their margin to 12 points (47-35) with 16:55 to play. Guilford responded with a 24-6 run over then next 8:41 and assumed a 59-53 advantage with 8:04 remaining in the game. Campbell and sophomore teammate Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) scored eight points apiece during the run.

The Generals pulled to within 61-60 with 5:31 to play, but Guilford responded with a 10-1 spurt to take an insurmountable 71-61 lead with 2:37 remaining. The Quakers defense limited Washington and Lee to less than 36 percent shooting from the floor in the second half and held the Generals to one field goal in the final 5:31 of the game.

Guilford rookie Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) matched her career high with 19 points while Miller finished with 18 points (15 in the second half) and a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) paced the Generals with 20 points and seven rebounds while senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) posted a double-double with 17 points and game-high 11 rebounds.

Guilford's men (3-18, 2-14 ODAC) dropped their ninth straight contest as host Virginia Wesleyan (16-4, 11-3 ODAC) moved into a second-place tie with Randolph-Macon in the ODAC standings. The loss eliminated the Quakers from the eight-team ODAC postseason tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Virginia Wesleyan senior Jason Nickerson (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville), the ODAC's leading scorer and rebounder, totaled 23 points and 14 rebounds in 26 minutes of work. The Marlins made 35 of 64 (54.7%) shots from the floor and enjoyed a 49-26 rebounding advantage. Guilford sophomore Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) tallied a game-high 28 points and seven rebounds in defeat.

The Quakers look to end their losing skid Sunday afternoon when they close out their non-league schedule at Chowan College in Murfreesboro.

Guilford's women return to action at home Tuesday evening (2/9) at 5:30 p.m. with an ODAC match against Virginia Wesleyan.
