WASHINGTON AND LEE RALLIES FOR ODAC HOOPS WIN AT GUILFORD

Greensboro, NC (11/24/98) -- Visiting Washington and Lee converted 21 Guilford turnovers into 26 points to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball opener for both teams Tuesday night, 67-55. The Generals overcame an eight-point first-half deficit to improve to 1-2 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC while the Quakers fall to 0-2 and 0-1 in the league.

Junior center Rich Peterson (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) led three Generals in double-figures with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Jackson (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) scored all 13 of his points in the second half and classmate Chad Braley (Huntington, WV/Paul Blazer) added 11 points thanks to three three-point baskets. Washington and Lee shot 53.5 percent from the floor on the night, 61.9 percent in the second half.

Guilford took advantage of 13 Washington and Lee first-half turnovers and led 31-27 at halftime. Two free throws by sophomore center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) gave Guilford a 27-19 advantage with 2:19 left in the opening period before the Generals trimmed the Quakers' lead to four at halftime.

Washington and Lee began the second half with a 19-7 spurt over the first eight minutes to open a 46-38 lead with 12:32 left to play. Jackson came alive for eight points, including two three-pointers, during the run.

After an Ashworth tip-in basket, Braley drained a three-pointer and Peterson scored a layup to boost the visitors' lead to 51-40 with 9:54 to play. Guilford pulled no closer than six points for the rest of the game.

Washington and Lee senior Kevin Cobbin (Jacksonville, FL/Bolles) scored eight points and tied a career-high with a game-high seven assists. Evans led Guilford with 14 points while Ashworth tossed in a season-high 13 points and grabbed a game-best eight rebounds.

The Quakers are back in action at Ferrum next Monday night at 7:30 p.m. Washington and Lee hosts preseason ODAC favorite Hampden-Sydney December 2 at 7:30 p.m.
