
EMORY & HENRY DOWNS GUILFORD MEN, 86-64
Greensboro, NC (2/10/99) -- Senior center Chris Barbour (Charlottesville, VA/W. Albemarle) led four Emory & Henry players in double figures with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the visiting Wasps cruised to an 86-64 Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball win over Guilford Wednesday night.
The Wasps (13-9, 10-6 ODAC) jumped out to a commanding 46-25 halftime lead on better than 64 percent shooting in the first half. Barbour racked up 12 of his points in the opening frame, while junior teammate Casey Johnson (Emory, VA/Virginia) tallied nine of his 12 markers in the first half. Johnson drained two of his first-half three-pointers during a 13-2 run in the early stages of the opening period which helped Emory & Henry set the tone for the rest of the game.
Guilford (3-20, 2-15 ODAC) played the Wasps to within one point (40-39) in the second half, but never drew closer than 18 points late in the second half.
Quakers freshman Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) led all scorers with a game- and career-high 23 points, which included three three-point baskets. The rookie swingman also tallied a game- and career-best five steals. Sophomore Matt Welborn (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan) added 12 points and sophomore guard David Zelickson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) tallied 11 points for the Quakers. Guilford started the game with seven healthy players and finished with just six. Leading scorer and rebounder Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) fouled out early in the second half after compiling four points and a team-best seven boards in 16 minutes.
Sophomore swingman Bryan Pruett (Narrows, VA/Narrows) scored 16 points on seven-of-11 shooting from the floor for Emory & Henry. Senior forward Donald Thurston (Manassas, VA/Osborn Park) added 12 points and eight boards for the Wasps. Emory & Henry shot better than 54 percent from the floor and enjoyed a 41-31 rebounding edge.
Guilford closes out the 1998-99 season at league rival Roanoke Monday night (2/15) at 7:30 pm, while the Wasps host Virginia Wesleyan in an important ODAC tilt Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
