ROANOKE RALLIES FOR ODAC MEN'S BASKETBALL WIN OVER GUILFORD

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (1/20/99) -- Sophomore Jason Strickland (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the second half to rally visiting Roanoke past Guilford, 86-76, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action Wednesday. The win extended Roanoke's winning streak against Guilford to 12 games and sent the Quakers to their sixth loss in seven outings.

Guilford, which dresses just eight players due to injury, lost starting forward Jeff Heybruck (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) in the game's fifth minute with a serious knee injury. The 16-man Roanoke team turned up the defensive pressure and erased a nine-point halftime deficit with a 19-4 run in the first five minutes of the second half. The Maroons forced 14 of the Quakers' 26 turnovers in the second half which lead to many transition baskets and a 61 percent second-half field-goal shooting percentage.

After falling behind 70-60 with 8:24 remaining, Guilford twice rallied to within four points. The Quakers used a 6-0 run to pull within 70-66, but back-to-back three-pointers by junior forward Kyle Murphy (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) and senior guard Dewayne Bullock (Indianapolis, IN/Arsenal Tech) bumped the Maroons' margin back to 76-66 with 5:02 left. A Murphy dunk gave Roanoke a 12-point cushion with 4:15 to play, but Guilford sophomore David Zelickson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) drained two three-pointers in a 10-2 Quakers' run which pulled the hosts back to within 80-76 with two minutes remaining. The Maroons made six of eight free throws and held Guilford scoreless in the final two minutes to secure the win.

Murphy and Bullock both scored all 10 of their points in the second half as all five Roanoke starters scored in double figures. Roanoke sophomore Alex Phillips (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) tallied 15 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Guilford sophomore Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) totalled a game-high 24 points (15 in the second half) and 10 rebounds for his ODAC-leading ninth double-double of the year. Zelickson finished with 17 points while sophomore center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) added his third double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Quakers look to avenge last Saturday's 81-63 defeat at Bridgewater this Saturday (1/23) afternoon when the Eagles visit Greensboro for a 2:00 p.m. contest. Roanoke returns to action Saturday (1/23) at league-rival Randolph-Macon.
