GUILFORD SWEEPS ODAC HOOPS DOUBLEHEADER
Greensboro, NC (1/12/99) -- Sophomore guard Jaron Randall (Trenton, NJ/Princeton Day School) made one of two free throws with two seconds left to lift host Guilford to a 58-57 upset of visiting Randolph-Macon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball play Tuesday night. The win gave Guilford a sweep of the league twinbill as Guilford's women downed Emory & Henry, 71-56, in the opener to snap a five-game losing skid.
Randall's heroics capped a tightly-played game which featured six ties and seven lead changes. The Quakers (3-9, 2-5 ODAC) trailed by eight points with 8:59 to play, but rallied with a 13-0 run over the next 6:09 to take a 57-52 lead with just under three minutes left. The Yellow Jackets (9-3, 5-2 ODAC), whose other losses are to Division I VMI and unbeaten Hampden-Sydney, rallied to tie the game at 57 on a three-pointer by senior forward Brian Pirttima (Ocala, FL/Forest) with 38 seconds to play. Guilford missed three shots on the following possession, but Randall came up with an offensive rebound and was fouled with two seconds left. Following a Randolph-Macon time-out, Randall made the first of two shots. Pirttima collected the rebound of Randall's second shot, but missed a midcourt shot as time expired.
Sophomore forward Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) posted his team-leading seventh double-double of the year with 14 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs. Evans reached the 500 career-points plateau with his first basket of the evening and became the fastest Quaker to reach the milestone (34 games) since Paul Ferrell '94 reached 500 in 33 games in 1992. Guilford sophomore Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) also scored 14 points, as did Pirttima and senior Matt Meehan (Ramstein, Germany) for Randolph-Macon. Meehan added 10 rebounds and four assists.
Guilford rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to hold a narrow 32-29 halftime lead.
In the opening game, rookie forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) totaled a game-and career-high 21 points, eight boards and seven steals as the host Quakers (3-7, 2-4 ODAC) staved off an Emory & Henry (2-7, 2-3 ODAC) comeback. Evans scored 13 of her points in the second half as the Wasps trimmed a 14-point halftime deficit to five points (57-52) with 4:10 remaining. Guilford responded by scoring 14 of the game's final 18 points to secure the victory.
Guilford sophomore Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School) tallied 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench while classmate Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) added 16 markers and five steals. The Quakers forced a season-high 32 turnovers, 18 in the first half.
Rookie Erin Kyle (Galax, VA/Galax) and junior Tammy Snyder (Creston, NC/Northwest Ashe) paced the Wasps with 12 points apiece. Kyle added a game-high 10 rebounds.
