QUAKERS' MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TABBED NINTH IN PRESEASON POLL

Salem, VA (11/02/00) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball coaches picked Guilford ninth in their preseason poll, the league announced Thursday at its annual media day at the Salem Civic Center. Defending league champion Roanoke received nine first-place votes and the top spot in the poll.

Second-year head coach Butch Estes returns 10 letter winners, including four starters, from last season's 6-18 unit. Guilford posted a 4-14 league record.  The Quakers finished one win shy of sixth place in the conference, but missed the eighth-team league tournament for the fifth straight season. Junior forward Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) is back after leading the Quakers with a career-high 12.2 points per game scoring average last year. Senior center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) returns after placing fifth among ODAC rebounding leaders a year ago (7.1 rpg).  Guilford opens its season November 21 at crosstown Division I rival UNC Greensboro.

Roanoke returns three starters among 11 letter winners from last season's 24-5 club that reached the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Hampden-Sydney, winners of three of the last four ODAC crowns, received one first-place vote and was picked second. Bridgewater, Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon round out the top five.
