GUILFORD HOSTS SEVENTH-RANKED HAMPDEN-SYDNEY IN MEN'S BASKETBALL
Greensboro, NC (01/23/01) -- Guilford's men's basketball team puts its four-game winning streak on the line Wednesday (1/24) when it hosts nationally ranked Hampden-Sydney in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action at 7:00 P.M. Winners of six straight games, the league-leading Tigers (15-1, 9-1 ODAC) enter the contest ranked seventh in this week's D3hoops.com Division III poll and second in the NCAA Division III South Region Rankings.
Guilford (8-9, 7-4 ODAC) sits a half game out of third place in the ODAC standings and in the midst of its longest winning streak since 1993. The Quakers' eight victories mark their most in a season since the 1994-95 unit went 11-14. The 1994-95 club team also won a school-record eight ODAC contests and is the last Guilford side to reach the league's eight-team tournament. Guilford's four-game conference winning streak marks the program's longest since the 1976-77.
The game features a number of Triad-based connections as both head coaches grew up in High Point, NC, attended High Point Central High School and then UNC Chapel Hill. Guilford's Butch Estes (UNC Chapel Hill '71) has never beaten Tony Shaver's (UNC Chapel Hill '76) Tigers in three tries, but his team does have a win over a top-10 team this season. The Quakers knocked off previously unbeaten Bridgewater, 65-56, January 15 when the Eagles were ranked 10th in the country.
Senior center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) leads Guilford's scorers (11.8 ppg.) and rebounders (6.5 rpg.). He averaged 15.3 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting over 64 percent from the floor in the Quakers' three wins last week. Rookie forwards Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) (5.1 ppg., 2.9 rpg.) and Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) (4.0 rpg., 3.8 rpg) have combined for 14 starts and provide valuable minutes up front.
The Tigers defeated Guilford for the 13th straight game, 62-49, December 9 in Hampden-Sydney, VA. The 13-point loss marked improvement for the Quakers after last year's 103-69 and 98-46 losses to the Tigers. Guilford played Hampden-Sydney in December without center Aron McMillian (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day), who joined the team from Division I Old Dominion earlier this month. The 6-9, 260-pound junior averages 6.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in about 15 minutes per game through seven contests.
Tickets are available at the door for $4.00. Non-Guilford students' tickets cost $2.00. Guilford students, faculty and staff and children under six receive free admission.
