GUILFORD ADDS TWO TO MEN'S BASKETBALL ROSTER

Greensboro, NC (01/13/00) -- Guilford College head men's basketball coach Butch Estes announced the addition of 6-8 junior forward Leonardo Scott (Anderson, SC/T.L. Hanna) and 5-8 point guard Jason Blackwood (High Point, NC/Andrews) to the men's basketball team. In addition, junior forwards Matt Welborn (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan) and Jeff Heybruck (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) will not return to the team this season due to nagging injuries.

Scott transfers to Guilford after starting the season at Division II Erskine College. He averaged 6.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in four games with the Flying Fleet this season. Scott ranked second among Erskine's scoring and rebounding leaders as a sophomore in 1998-99 when he averaged 13.0 points and 5.7 boards per game. He spent the 1996-97 season at Division I Charleston Southern, where he averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 22 games, primarily as a reserve. Through 52 career contests, Scott averages 7.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

Scott lettered three seasons with T.L. Hanna High School's basketball team for Coach Wayne Jones. He earned all-conference and all-area recognition for the Yellow Jackets as well as the WYFF-TV News Center Prep Spotlight Award. His father, Edgar, played basketball for four years at Clemson from 1974-78. Scott will major in sports medicine.

Blackwood attended High Point University for three semesters before transferring to Guilford, but did not play basketball. He received All-Tri-County 3-A Conference hoops honors three times for High Point Andrews High School under Coach Frank Hairston. A very quick point guard, Blackwood was an honorable mention All-Guilford County and All-Northwest North Carolina selection and helped the Red Raiders to the 1995 3-A state basketball title. He played six seasons with the Greensboro Gaters AAU program and will be a sport management major at Guilford.

Estes' club (3-9, 2-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) seeks to break a four-game losing streak Friday night when it visits Eastern Mennonite in league play. The Quakers visit ODAC-rival Bridgewater Saturday night (1/15) at 7:00 pm.
