AVERETT DOWNS COLD-SHOOTING QUAKERS, 82-60, IN MEN'S BASKETBALL
Greensboro, NC (12/09/99) -- Senior swingman Demarcus Morrison (Danville, VA/George Washington) posted game highs with 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead visiting Averett to an 82-60 nonconference men's basketball win over Guilford Thursday night. Senior center David Apple (Danville, VA/George Washington) added 19 points, six boards and three blocks for the Cougars, who forced the Quakers into a season-low 28.4 percent shooting effort from the floor.
Both teams started slowly in the first half, but Averett (3-3) eventually warmed up and outscored the Quakers (2-5), 13-6, over the final five minutes to grab a 32-25 halftime lead. Apple, who entered the contest averaging over four blocks per game, scored 10 of his points in the first half and disrupted Guilford's inside game.
A traditional three-point play by Guilford sophomore Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) with 16:22 remaining drew the hosts to within 38-36, but the Quakers remained cold from the floor. Averett used a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to open an 11-point lead which grew to 23 as Guilford's shooting woes continued. Morrison made nine of 10 free throws in the final 3:41 while the Quakers unsuccessfully tried to foul their way back into the game.
Woolley finished with 21 points and six rebounds for Guilford. Juniors David Zelickson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) and Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) added 10 points apiece in defeat.
Guilford hosts Eastern Mennonite Saturday afternoon at 3:00 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game, while the Cougars host the Apprentice School Saturday night at 7:30 in the Grant Center.
