Greensboro, NC (02/12/00) -- Sophomore Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) led four players in double figures with 21 points as Guilford downed visiting Chowan, 88-77, in a nonconference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon.
In the first game of Guilford's home basketball doubleheader, junior Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to lead Guilford's women to a 67-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Randolph-Macon. The women's third straight triumph gives them 11 wins in their last 12 games.
Woolley's career-high four three-pointers helped the Quakers (6-16) rally for their second straight victory. Chowan (9-11) led by as many as 12 points in the first half before Guilford whittled its halftime deficit to 38-34. Trailing 46-41 three minutes into the second half, Guilford held Chowan scoreless for the next 5:40 and scored 19 straight points to claim a 60-46 edge with 11:33 left. The Quakers' lead grew to as many as 21 before Chowan rallied to within 86-77 with 39 seconds left.
Paul Kindem (East Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) led a strong effort by Guilford's reserves with 16 points, including 14 in the second period. Sophomores John Carter (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) and Matt Lewis (Norwell, MA/Cushing Academy) added 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench. Lewis grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Chowan's Anthony McGruder (Lanham, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) led all scorers with 25 points and had seven boards. Junior guard Marcus Webb (Butner, NC/South Granville) added 24 points and five assists for the visitors.
Miller put together her third straight impressive outing as Guilford's women (16-5, 13-4 ODAC) maintained a share of first place in the conference standings with a 67-52 win over Randolph-Macon (12-9, 11-6 ODAC). She had 37 points and 13 points in Thursday's win over Lynchburg, and totaled 19 points and 17 rebounds the night before against league-leading Emory & Henry. Miller has 13 double-doubles this season.
The Quakers' overcame a sluggish start in which they missed their first 13 shots from the floor before freshman Shannon Underwood (Niantic, CT/East Lyme) drained a jumper 7:40 into the game to give Guilford a 6-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets held a brief lead midway through the first period before Guilford shut out the visitors for the last 5:05 and claimed a 35-20 halftime advantage. The Quakers closed out the half on a 14-0 run that featured nine points by Miller. Randolph-Macon twice cut its deficit to 10 points in the second stanza, but drew no closer.
Guilford sophomore Megan Barlow (Chevy Chase, MD/Whitman) led all scorers with 23 points, plus eight rebounds and five steals. Senior Bren Elliot (Waynesboro, VA/Waynesboro) tallied a team-high 11 points off the bench for Randolph-Macon. Classmate Renee Zando (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) added six points and a game-high nine rebounds. Neither team shot over 35 percent from the floor. Guilford held the Yellow Jackets to 28.8 field goal percent shooting, while making 34.4 percent of its own shots.
Both Quakers' teams are home this Monday night (2/14) when the women host Lynchburg at 5:00 p.m. and the men meet Roanoke at 7:00 p.m.
