McMANUS LEADS WASPS TO COMEBACK HOOPS WIN OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (11/23/99) -- Senior center David McManus (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford) scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead visiting Emory & Henry to a come-from-behind 81-71 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Guilford Tuesday night. The Wasps rallied from eight points down early in the second half to take the road victory in the league opener for both teams.
The Wasps used an 8-0 run to erase the eight-point deficit and took their first lead of the game (53-52) on a jumper by junior guard Bryan Pruett (Narrow, VA/Narrows) with 10:44 to play. Pruett, who scored 12 second-half points, followed with one of his three three-point baskets to increase the visitors' lead to 56-52. The trifecta came in the early stages of a decisive 23-8 run which gave Emory & Henry a 74-60 advantage with 1:10 to play. The Wasps held Guilford to two field goals during the 10-minute 23-8 run.
Guilford sophomore Bryson McKinney (Ararat, NC/Surry Central) hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to pull the Quakers to within 77-71, but junior guard Anthony McCoy (Stone Mountain, GA/Stone Mountain) and Pruett each made two free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure the Wasps' win.
In addition to his game-high 24 points, McManus led all rebounders with nine as he played in his hometown for the final time in his career. Pruett added eight boards and helped the Wasps to a commanding 55-32 rebounding advantage.
Redshirt freshman guard Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) paced the Quakers with a career-high 17 points and five assists off the bench. Junior guard David Zelickson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) chipped in 14 points behind three three-pointers.
The Quakers are back in action Monday, November 29 at North Carolina Wesleyan, while Emory & Henry hosts King on the same night.
