GENERALS TAKE FOURTH STRAIGHT FROM GUILFORD MEN, 74-56

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (02/16/00) -- Washington and Lee rookie Ryan Small (Dallas, TX/Highland Park) hit four of six three-pointers on the way to a career- and game-high 18 points as the Generals (8-15, 6-12 ODAC) dashed Guilford's ODAC Tournament hopes with a 74-56 road win Wednesday night in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The loss ends the Quakers' year and leaves Guilford (6-18, 4-14 ODAC) out of the league tourney for the sixth straight season.

Despite a four-game losing skid and missing two injured regulars, Washington and Lee came out firing and made 13 of 20 first-half field goals (65 percent), including five of eight three-point attempts. Guilford held a 24-23 advantage with 4:03 left in the half before Washington and Lee closed the period on a 10-2 run behind six points by freshman Scott Hetterman (Falls Church, VA/Landon School).

The hot shooting continued in the second half as Small and senior guard Walt Plyler (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) canned consecutive trifectas to boost a four-point lead to 10 (39-29) with 17 minutes left in the game. The Quakers twice trimmed the deficit to six points, but the Generals had an answer and increased their lead with 22 second-half free throws. Washington and Lee did not score a field goal in the last 7:40, but made 21 of 28 free throws in that time.

Plyler went seven of eight from the line in the second half and finished with a career-high 14 points. Junior guard Chad Braley ((Huntington, WV/Paul Blazer) scored 14 points off the bench behind three three pointers. The Generals shot 62.5 percent (10 of 16) from behind the arc and owned a 42-27 rebounding advantage, which included nine second-half offensive rebounds.

Junior center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) paced the Quakers with 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomores John Carter (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) and Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) added 10 points apiece for the Quakers.

Washington and Lee earned the sixth seed in the ODAC Tournament and meets third-seeded Bridgewater Saturday night at (2/19) 8:00 p.m. in the Salem (VA) Civic Center.
