ODAC BASKETBALL POLLS ANNOUNCED

Greensboro, NC (11/11/99) -- Guilford's women's basketball team is picked sixth and the Quakers' men are tabbed ninth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) preseason polls, the league announced Thursday. The ODAC's head basketball coaches chose defending league champion Bridgewater as the team to beat in the women's poll, while 1999 national runner-up Hampden-Sydney was the unanimous top choice in the men's poll.

Guilford's women return four starters and five letter winners from last season's club which finished 12-13 overall, 11-9 in the conference. Head coach Barb Bausch starts her seventh season with her top three scorers from the 1998-99 team, including junior guard Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley), an honorable mention all-league performer last season. Junior forward/guard Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) led the Quakers' last year with a career-high 13.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. The Quakers open their season November 19 against Denison in a tournament hosted by Carnegie-Mellon.

The Quakers' men, under first-year head coach Butch Estes, also return four starters, plus seven additional letter winners. Guilford finished with a 3-21 overall record last season, 2-14 in the ODAC. The Quakers lost second team All-ODAC pick Jon Evans and his 17.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game from last year's squad, but return a solid backcourt tandem in junior captains Jaron Randall (Trenton, NJ/Princeton Day School) and David Zelickson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day). Sophomore swingman Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) is the club's top returning scorer after averaging 11.7 points in 18 games last season. The Quakers open the season November 20 at Division I Davidson. Their first home game is Tuesday, November 23 against Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
