Now in his ninth season, Randy
Mercer holds the longest lacrosse coaching tenure in school history. His 28
victories rank third on the Quakers all-time wins list. He came to Guilford in 1993
from American International College and coached Guilford's soccer and lacrosse teams for
three years. The college split the soccer and lacrosse positions in 1997, which enables
Mercer to spend more time focused on lacrosse. The Quakers have consistently attracted
better lacrosse student-athletes since the change in responsibilities.
At American International, Mercer founded the men's lacrosse program for the Division II Yellow Jackets and also directed the men's soccer team. He held assistant coaching positions at Kenyon College and at Division III lacrosse power Salisbury State. In his two seasons as Salisbury State's goalkeepers coach, the Seagulls posted an 18-10 record and had six All-America players.
The Syracuse native played scholastic lacrosse and soccer at Fayetteville-Manlius High School before heading to Alfred University where he lettered four seasons with the Saxons' lacrosse squad. After graduating from Alfred with an accounting degree in 1986, he went to Salisbury State and received a master's degree in education two years later.
Randy and his wife, Amy, an instructor at North Davidson High School, live in nearby Davidson County with their daughter, Hannah, and infant twins, Cameron and Mia.
