BIG THIRD QUARTER LIFTS -RANKED TIGERS TO ODAC LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD

Hampden-Sydney, VA (4/03/99) --  Hampden-Sydney outscored visiting Guilford, 7-0, in a decisive third quarter to notch a 13-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win Saturday afternoon at Fulton Field.  The Tigers, ranked 10th in this week's STX/USILA Division III men's lacrosse poll, improves to 7-2 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC, with their fourth straight win.  Guilford falls to 5-6 overall, 0-3 in the conference with its third consecutive loss.

Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 4-1 first-quarter lead thanks to two of junior midfielder Doug Palmer's (Vienna, VA/Madison) goals.  The Quakers answered with back-to-back scores from seniors Fran Randall (Homer, NY/Homer) and Ted Long (Halifax, MA/Cape Cod, Academy) to pull within 4-3 early in the second quarter.  Following a nine-minute scoring drought, Hampden-Sydney got consecutive tallies from Scott Claiborne and Palmer to take a 6-2 halftime advantage.

The third quarter was all Hampden-Sydney as the Tigers enjoyed a 12-2 shots advantage and got two goals apiece from Chamie Burroughs (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) and Matt Yancey (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield).

Guilford sophomore James Houck (Annapolis, MD/Key School) provided the fourth quarter's lone goal with his career-high fifth tally of the season.  Quaker goaltender Anthony Roman (New York, NY/St. Michael's Academy) made a game-high 16 saves in 51 minutes of work.
