HAMILTON SCORES FOUR IN MARLINS' MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (3/27/99)-- Junior midfielder Art Hamilton (Alexandria, VA/Robert E. Lee) scored four goals and rookie attackman Brian Fox (Chapel Hill, NC/Christchurch) added three goals and two assists as 22nd-ranked Virginia Wesleyan scored an 11-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over host Guilford Saturday afternoon.
Fox and Hamilton each scored twice as the Marlins (6-1, 2-1 ODAC) scored the first five goals of the game and kept Guilford (5-4, 0-2 ODAC) off the board until the 1:25 mark of the second quarter. Junior midfielder Dusty Ollerhead (Towson, MD/Towson) put the Quakers on the board with his first of two goals. Senior Chris Whitener (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) dent the twine with 20 seconds left in the period to give the visitors a 6-1 halftime lead.
Guilford senior Chad Tripp (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) pulled the Quakers to within 6-2 with an extra-man goal with 4:15 left in the third quarter, but Fox answered with an extra-man tally of his own with 2:27 left and started a 4-0 Marlins' run. Hamilton followed with his third goal of the game 21 seconds later and closed out the third-quarter scoring with his fourth goal of the game with 1:28 left in the period.
Virginia Wesleyan enjoyed a sizable advantage in shots (49-22) and ground balls (61-37) and outshot the Quakers 17-2 in the first quarter.
The Marlins took a 6-4 lead in the overall season series between the two schools with their sixth straight win.
