WESTERN NEW ENGLAND WINS GUILFORD LACROSSE TOURNAMENT CONSOLATION GAME
Greensboro, NC (3/21/99) -- Freshmen Bill Locher (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) and John Anicito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) each scored two goals and an assist to lead Western New England College to a 10-4 win over Catawba in the consolation game of the Guilford College Lacrosse Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Guilford defeated Tufts, 8-7, in Sunday's championship game.
The Golden Bears (1-4) overcame 13 penalties and sloppy field conditions in recording their first win of 1999. Western New England killed off 12 man-down situations and tallied a pair of extra-man goals at the start of the second and third quarters. Senior P.J. Wicker (New Windsor, NY/Trinity Pawling) also scored twice for the Golden Bears.
Senior attackman Phil Hemmeler (Columbus, OH/Hilliard) led Catawba's effort with a goal and two assists, while junior midfielder Tony Fescina (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) scored twice and recorded a game-high 11 ground balls. Catawba goalkeeper Andrew Gaunt (Manchester, ENG/Park Wood) did his best to keep his team in the game with 24 saves.
