QUAKERS EDGE TUFTS FOR GUILFORD LACROSSE TOURNAMENT TITLE
Greensboro, NC (3/21/99) -- Freshman Nick Laughton (Marina, CA/St. Mary's Ryken (MD)) scored his second extra-man goal of the game off an assist from senior Ted Long (Halifax, MA/Cape Cod Academy) with 6:02 remaining to give host Guilford an 8-7 win over Tufts in Sunday's championship game of the Guilford College Lacrosse Tournament.
Western New England (1-4) defeated Catawba (1-5), 10-4, in the consolation game.
For the second straight game Tufts (1-1) rallied from a three-goal deficit and took a third-quarter lead. Back-to-back extra-man scores capped a 4-0 run and gave the Jumbos a 6-5 edge with 4:18 left in the third quarter.
Guilford answered with an extra-man goal by Long and Tournament Most Valuable Player Chad Tripp's (Syracuse, NY/Henniger) second score of the game to take a 7-6 advantage with 10:57 remaining.
Tufts came right back and tied the contest for the fourth and final time (7-7) when rookie Eric Krause (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) netted his first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore Brian Hwang (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) with 9:34 to play.
Tufts controlled the bulk of the fourth quarter play, patiently working for shots on the muddy and worn out field. Guilford gained possession midway through the period and a slashing penalty on Tufts junior attackman Greg Molinelli (Northport, NY/Northport) gave the Quakers a man advantage with 6:42 to play. Laughton took a feed from Long and blasted a straight-on shot from 13 yards out past Tufts netminder Mike Terrasi (Franklin Square, NY/Carey) to give Guilford the 8-7 lead.
The Jumbos peppered the Quakers with shots all period, but could not get many on goal. Molinelli took on a Guilford defender at the top of the possession box with 10 seconds to go and worked towards the goal, but his last-second shot was knocked down in front of the net and trickled wide as time expired.
Tripp, a senior midfielder, took home MVP honors after compiling four goals and three assists in the two weekend games.
