GUILFORD, TUFTS ADVANCE TO GUILFORD LACROSSE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Greensboro, NC (3/20/99) -- Junior midfielder Dusty Ollerhead (Towson, MD/Towson) scored his career-high third goal of the game with 5:57 remaining lifting Guilford to a 13-12 win over Western New England in the first round of the Guilford College Lacrosse Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers (4-3) meet Tufts University in Sunday's championship game at 2:30. The Division III Jumbos (1-0) downed Division II Catawba (1-4), 8-7, in Saturday's first contest.
Neither team held greater than a two-goal lead throughout the tightly played contest which featured nine ties and seven lead changes. The Golden Bears (0-4) took their final lead with 11:48 remaining on junior Nick Evans' (Pittsfield, MA/St. Joseph's) second goal of the game. Guilford tied the contest 2:14 later when sophomore James Houck (Annapolis, MD/Key School) rolled the cage, jumped and put the ball past Western New England goaltender Jared Barringer (Troy, NY/Christian Brothers) for his career-high fourth goal of the year. Ollerhead's game winner came straight on from about seven feet out off a pass from senior attackman Ted Long (Halifax, MA/Cape Cod Academy). It was Guilford's season-best third extra-man goal of the game.
Guilford jumped out to a 5-3 lead early in the game thanks to three first-quarter scores from sophomore Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles). He finished with a career-high four tallies and a game- and career-best 11 ground balls.
Freshman attackman Bill Locher (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) led all scorers with four goals and an assist and scored twice during a 4-0 Golden Bears' second-quarter run which gave the visitors a 7-5 lead. Senior attackman P.J. Wicker (New Windsor, NY/Trinity-Pawling) scored Western New England's seventh goal and finished with four scores on the day.
