QUAKERS HANG ON FOR MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER SWARTHMORE

Greensboro, NC (3/11/99) -- Guilford withstood a late Swarthmore rally to preserve an 11-10 victory Thursday afternoon in the Armfield Athletic Center. The win extended the Quakers' winning streak to three games - the program's longest since 1992 - and marks Guilford's best start (3-1) since the 1992 team opened the season with four straight wins.

Guilford sophomore Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) capped a 5-0 run with his third goal of the game to give the hosts an 11-6 advantage with 12:47 remaining in the game. Swarthmore's Toby Patterson (Silver Spring, MD/Sandy Spring Friends) answered just under three minutes later to trim Guilford's lead to 11-7 with 10:05 left.

Following a nine-minute scoring drought, Swarthmore sprang to life when sophomore Michael Lloyd (Millersville, MD/Old Mill) scored with 1:34 remaining. Sophomore Mark Dingfield (Seattle, WA/Lakeside) netted a transition tally with 23 seconds left and scored again as time expired to provide the final margin.

Dingfield led all scorers with four goals and an assist. Patterson and junior midfielder Adam Dickinson (Farmington, ME/Mt. Blue) each tallied twice for the Garnet while rookie Blake Atkins (Cockeysville, MD/Gilman) notched a game-high three assists and eight ground balls. Junior goalie Sig Rydquist (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy) made 15 saves, nine in the second half, and picked up a game-best 10 ground balls.

Synowiez paced the Quakers with three goals and an assist. Senior Ted Long (Halifax, MA/Cape Cod Academy) matched his career high with three tallies, including the first two of the game to help Guilford to an early 3-0 advantage. Senior attackman Fran Randall (Homer, NY/Homer) and sophomore James Houck (Annapolis, MD/Key School) each tallied twice in the win. For Houck, the two goals marked a career high. Sophomore goaltender Anthony Roman (New York, NY/New York) turned in a solid effort with a season-high 18 saves, including six in the final quarter.
