RANDALL LIFTS GUILFORD TO MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER SHENANDOAH

Greensboro, NC (03/01/99) -- Senior Fran Randall (Homer, NY/Homer) tallied a career-high five goals and two assists and senior Chad Tripp (Syracuse, NY/Heninger) added a career-best three goals and one assist as Guilford downed visiting Shenandoah Monday afternoon, 14-6. The Hornets (0-2) six goals are the fewest allowed in a game by Guilford since a 13-4 win over Shenandoah April 13, 1996.

Randall and Tripp spotted the Quakers (2-1) an early 2-0 lead, but Hornets sophomore Joe Krewson (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge) cut the deficit in half late in the quarter with his first of a team-best five scores on the day.

Guilford gradually extended its lead in the second quarter thanks to two tallies by Randall and five saves from sophomore goalie Anthony Roman (New York, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) - many at close range. Tripp and Randall scored less than a minute apart late in the quarter to give the Quakers a 6-1 halftime lead.

Krewson scored twice in the third period as the Hornets drew to within 7-3 with 4:56 left in the period, but Guilford responded with three straight goals in less than a minute to establish a 10-3 edge headed into the final quarter.

The Hornets (0-2) did not go away as rookie Yaquay Brooks (Annandale, VA/Annandale) notched his first collegiate tally and Krewson followed with his second extra-man goal of the day 57 seconds later to draw Shenandoah to within 10-5. The Quakers regained the momentum and scored three of the last four goals to post their first back-to-back victories since April, 1997.

Sophomore Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) posted his third straight hat trick with three goals and an assist for Guilford while classmate Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) added two goals and two assists. Roman finished with a season-high 15 saves while Shenandoah junior Mark Neely (Burke, VA/Robinson) turned in an exceptional effort in goal with 27 saves and 12 goals allowed in over 56 minutes of work.
