Guilford-Marietta Statistics        Mary Washington-Wooster Statistics

Greensboro, NC (03/16/02) - Guilford recorded its first men's lacrosse shutout since 1985 with an 18-0 victory over Marietta Saturday in the opening round of the Guilford Lacrosse Tournament Saturday in the Armfield Athletic Center. The win advances the host Quakers (4-1) into the championship game against Mary Washington, a 12-5 winner over Wooster in Saturday's second contest.

The Guilford-Mary Washington game begins Sunday (03/17) at 2:30 p.m. in Guilford's Armfield Athletic Center. The consolation match between Marietta and Wooster starts Sunday at noon.

Freshman attackman Mark Fiore (Doylestown, PA/Bridgton Academy (ME)) matched his career high with four goals and added four assists to lead Guilford to its third straight win. Sophomore midfielder Justin Blanchette (Westfield, MA/Westfield) scored three times and sophomore attackman Josh Miller (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) tallied two goals and three assists for the Quakers. Four different players scored in a one-minute, 44-second span midway through the first quarter to help Guilford to a 5-0 lead. Blanchette, Miller and sophomore Won Hill (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) each scored twice in the Quakers' eight-goal second period that gave the hosts a 13-0 halftime edge.

Freshman goaltender Aaron Skiles (Weirton, WV/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) went the distance in goal and made six saves to give Guilford its first shutout since a 17-0 whitewash of Georgia Tech in the 1985 season opener. Junior Scott Sojda (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) made 12 saves in goal for the Pioneers (1-1).

Marietta coach Steve Diamond is a 1997 Guilford graduate and in his second season at the Pioneers' helm. He played four seasons under Guilford boss Randy Mercer and assisted Mercer from 1998-2000.

Nine different Mary Washington (3-3) players scored in a balanced 12-5 victory over Wooster (0-1) in Saturday's second game. Eagles' midfielder Jamie Test (Alexandria, VA/Gonzaga) led all scorers with two goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Jeb Boland (Chevy Chase, MD/Georgetown Prep) and sophomore attackman Matt Wiles (Gainesville, VA/Paul VI) also scored twice for Mary Washington.

Wooster held a 3-2 second-quarter lead after sophomore midfielder Tom Canfield (Hanover, NH/Hanover) found the back of the net 2:46 into the period. The Eagles took the game over with a 9-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter. The Fighting Scots' Steve Burton (Shelby Township, MI/Bishop Foley) stopped the spurt with his second of three goals with 10:40 left in the game. Mary Washington controlled play for the middle two quarters, during which time it held a 30-9 advantage in shots and won eight of 11 face-offs.
