TATE LEADS KENYON TO 14-6 MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (03/03/02) -- Senior attackman Greg Tate (Durham, NC/Riverside) scored five goals to lead visiting Kenyon to a 14-6 lacrosse win over Guilford in the Lords' season opener. Tate scored four times during a 7-1 Kenyon run in the second half.
Junior attackman Justin Martinich (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) had a hand in all three Kenyon second-quarter scores that gave the visitors a 5-1 halftime lead. Guilford opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals by sophomore midfielder Justin Blanchette (Westfield, MA/Westfield) and sophomore attackman Chip Hill (Sellersville, PA/Central Bucks West) early in the third quarter to pull within 5-3.
Tate silenced Guilford's rally with just under four minutes left in the third period with a fast-break goal set up by senior midfielder Charlie Rich (Wellesley, MA/Roxbury Latin). Guilford senior Nate Goodman (Port Ewen, NY/Kingston) was penalized one minute for slashing on the goal and sophomore midfielder Ross Zachary (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) tallied an extra-man score 47 seconds later to give the Lords an 8-3 advantage. Kenyon outscored Guilford, 6-2, in the final period. Sophomore midfielder Jason McCaw (Cincinnati, OH/Indian Hill) netted both of his goals in the fourth quarter for Kenyon.
The Lords outshot Guilford, 71-22, and enjoyed a 63-40 edge in ground balls. Guilford freshman goalie Aaron Skiles (Weirton, WV/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) made 19 saves in his first college start, while Kenyon rookie Dave Neiman (Glencoe, IL/New Trier) had eight of the Lords' nine stops. Guilford's Blanchette scored a career-high four points (3g, 1a) in the loss.
Guilford hosts Misericordia Wednesday (03/06) afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Kenyon plays Franklin & Marshall Wednesday at Duke University in Durham before closing out its North Carolina trip at Greensboro March 9.
