Greensboro, NC (04/04/01) -- Sophomore midfielder Paul Venturella (Millersville, MD/Old Mill) scored five goals and freshman attackman Brandon Childs (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) tallied a career-high seven assists as visiting Lynchburg dealt Guilford a 26-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse setback Wednesday. The loss extends the Quakers' (4-4, 0-3 ODAC) ODAC losing streak to 49 games, dating to 1993.
Lynchburg (5-3, 3-1 ODAC) is ranked 21st in this week's STX/United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III national poll and has won five of its last six games.
After Guilford junior defenseman Bob Montemarano (Severna Park, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) put the Quakers on the board with his first career goal, the Hornets scored 23 straight goals before Quakers' senior Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) tallied late in the fourth quarter.
Venturella scored three of the Hornets' seven extra-man goals, including one during a three-minute illegal stick penalty on Guilford to start the second quarter. He scored all five goals in the first half as Lynchburg built a 12-1 halftime advantage.
Fifteen different Hornets scored in the game, including senior attackman Josh Paris (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock), who recorded a hat trick with three third-quarter tallies.
Lynchburg outshot Guilford, 60-16, and had 34 of the game's 35 shots in the second and third quarters.
Guilford visits league-rival Randolph-Macon Saturday (4/7), while the Hornets meet Whittier Saturday in a 5:00 PM contest at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
