Greensboro, NC (02/24/01) -- Mars Hill sophomore attackman Mike Donecho (Asheville, NC/Comeswogue (NY)) scored a career-high eight goals and added two assists, but host Guilford hung on for a 14-11 home men's lacrosse win over the Division II Spartans Saturday. Freshman attackman Josh Miller (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) paced the Quakers with a career-high six points on two goals and four assists.
Donecho, the top returning scorer in NCAA Division II this season, scored seven times in the second half as the Spartans (0-1) tried to erase a 6-3 halftime deficit. They pulled to within two goals three times in the third quarter, but drew no closer as Guilford seniors Kevin Dawyskiba (Norwell, MA/Norwell) and Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) scored back-to-back tallies for an 11-7 Quakers' lead after three periods.
Donhecho set up junior midfielder Jeff Miles' (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) extra-man goal early in the fourth quarter and cut the margin to 11-8, but Guilford regained some breathing room with two straight tallies for a 13-8 lead with 7:55 left.
Guilford senior goaltender Anthony Roman (New York, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) kept the Spartans at bay for most of the fourth quarter with six of his 17 saves. However, Donecho heated up again late in the quarter and scored three times in the final 1:33, including two man-down scores. He finished the day with six ground balls and seven won face-offs in addtion to his 10 points.
