GAUTHIER SCORES FIVE IN GUILFORD'S MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER LEES-McRAE
Greensboro, NC (02/17/01) - Senior attackman Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) scored a career-high five goals and rookie attackman Josh Miller (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) added a goal and three assists as host Guilford downed Division II Lees-McRae, 11-4, in the men's lacrosse season-opener for both teams.
Gauthier triggered a decisive 6-0 Quakers' (1-0) run that covered both halves. He scored broke a 2-2 tie with his first goal of the game late in the first quarter and opened the second period with a fast-break score off a Miller assist. Guilford controlled play for most of the second quarter with a deliberate offensive attack and carried a 5-2 lead into halftime.
Quakers' senior midfielder Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) scored his second straight goal 1:21 into the second half and Gauthier followed with his third goal of the day 55 seconds leader to give the hosts a comfortable 7-2 lead. Miller capped the Quakers' run with his first college goal midway through the third quarter.
Junior midfielder Matt Edmunds (Poynton, ENG/Poynton L.C.) pulled Lees-McRae to within 9-4 in the first minute of the fourth quarter before the Quakers salted the game away with goals by senior midfielder Rusty Ollerhead (Timonium, MD/Calvert Hall) and Gauthier. Play turned chippy in the final periods as the teams combined for 12 of the games's 18 penalties in the final 15 minutes.
Guilford senior goaltender Anthony Roman (New York, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) made 14 saves in his return to the nets after a season in the midfield. Sophomore Nat Joiner (Salem, VA/Salem) had 13 stops in a losing cause.
