ROANOKE SCORES 21-4 MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD

Salem, VA (04/19/00) -- Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) set Roanoke's single-season rookie scoring record with two goals and five assists in his Maroon's 21-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s lacrosse team win over visiting Guilford Wednesday. The 20th-ranked Maroons (8-4, 3-2 ODAC) rebounded from a 2-1 second-quarter deficit and scored 20 of the game's final 22 goals.

Juniors Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) and Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) each tallied in the opening quarter to stake the Quakers (2-9, 0-6 ODAC) to an early 2-1 lead, but the host Maroons tallied six unanswered second-quarter goals to grab a 7-2 halftime lead.

Roanoke's special teams contributed two extra-man goals and a pair of man-down tallies. The first of the two shorthanded goal came in the second quarter, with David Taylor (Butler, MD/St. Paul’s) taking a pass from Bonasera and beating Guilford goalie Jason Capen (New Baltimore, MI/University-Liggett) high. Freshman Mike LaRose (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) scored the second man-down tally with 22 seconds left in the contest. Roanoke senior Jim Cappellett (Little River, SC/Vestal) scored four times, as did freshman John Murrow (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville).

Bonasera's 53 points eclipse the old school record of 52, set by Kin Nevitt in 1974.

Capen stopped a career-high 19 Maroon shots in defeat. Roanoke senior Brandon DeVoe (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) played 45 minutes in the Roanoke cage, making 15 saves. In all the Maroons stopped 19 shots, with freshman Tim Morse (Santa Fe, NM/Tabor) stopping five.

The Maroons close out their 2000 regular season Saturday (4/22) at league-rival Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm, while the Quakers visit Shenandoah Saturday (4/22) in nonleague play.
