WASHINGTON AND LEE DOWNS GUILFORD IN MEN'S LACROSSE
Greensboro, NC - Sophomore Andrew Barnett (Darien, CT/Darien) and junior Pope Hackney (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) each scored three goals and two assists as fifth-ranked Washington and Lee posted a 17-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse win at Guilford Saturday afternoon. The Generals' (10-1, 5-0) seventh consecutive win clinched a fifth straight 10-win season for the second time in the program's 53-year history.
Barnett, a converted midfielder, made his first collegiate start on the attack and responded with a career-high five points. He scored the game's opening goal and tallied twice during a decisive 10-0 Washington and Lee run in the second half that broke the game open.
Guilford (2-8, 0-5 ODAC) fell for the sixth straight game despite a solid defensive effort for the first 30 minutes. The Quakers held the Generals to five first-half goals and trailed by only three goals (5-2) early in the third quarter after junior attackman Colin Smith (Garden City, NY/Garden City) tallied his first of two goals. Hackney answered with his first goal two minutes later and triggered the 10-0 spurt. He and Barnett scored back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart, which helped the visitors to an 11-2 lead after three quarters. The Generals converted three of four man-up chances in the final quarter.
Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, NJ/Mountain Lakes) hit for two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Andrew Jones (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy), senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, MD/Towson) and junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, MD/Calvert Hall) also dent the twine twice for the Generals. The win extends Washington and Lee's advantage in the season series with Guilford to 12-0 and pulls the Generals to within one win of the ODAC championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Guilford visits nationally ranked Roanoke Wednesday (4/19) afternoon and the Generals host Whittier this Monday (4/17).
