RANDOLPH-MACON RALLIES FOR ODAC MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (04/08/00) - Sophomore attack Rick Fegan (Gaithersburg, MD/Georgetown Prep) scored four goals and two assists in visiting Randolph-Macon's come-from-behind Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse win over Guilford Saturday at Haworth Field. The entire contest was played in a driving rain storm.
The host Quakers (2-7, 0-4 ODAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 6-5 halftime advantage on junior attack Colin Smith's (Garden City, NY/Garden City, NY) goal with seven seconds left in the second quarter. Smith netted two more goals in the third quarter and helped Guilford to an 8-6 lead with 4:35 left in the third.
Fegan triggered a four-goal spurt in the last two minutes of the third quarter with his third tally of the afternoon with 2:41 left. He set up linemate Hugh Purvis (Hunt Valley, MD/Calvert Hall) 19 seconds later to tie the game. After senior midfielder Jim Graham (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) netted the go-ahead goal with 34 seconds remaining, Fegan found Bryan Casey (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) to give the Yellow Jackets (4-3, 1-2 ODAC) a 10-8 lead after three periods.
Guilford junior Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) pulled the Quakers to within 10-9 with 13:55 left in the game, but the Yellow Jackets closed the scoring with three goals in a 29-second span midway through the final quarter.
The loss extended Guilford's losing streak to five and offset a brilliant performance by Smith, who matched his career high with six goals and also scored an assist. Synowiez tallied a season-high five points (2g, 3a).
Purvis and rookie midfielder Hunter Price (Charlottesville, VA/W. Albemarle) tallied twice for Randolph-Macon, which ended a three-game losing skid. Senior goaltender Matt Loda (Chapel Hill, NC/Virginia Episcopal) made nine saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Guilford hosts nationally ranked Washington and Lee next Saturday (4/15) at 1:00 pm.
