
LYNCHBURG MEN'S LACROSSE CRUISES PAST GUILFORD, 14-2
Lynchburg, VA (4/5/00) - Freshman Toby Costello (Tiburon, CA/Redwood) scored three goals to lead Lynchburg's mens lacrosse team to a 14-2 victory against Guilford in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Shellenberger Field Wednesday. The Hornets, ranked 15th in this week's STX/, extend their win streak to three and boast an overall record of 6-2, 3-1 in the ODAC.
Lynchburg jumped out to the early advantage with three goals in the first period, including two from junior Jason Jeffries (Alexandria, VA/Edison), and added six in the second period to lift the score to 9-0 at the break.
Lynchburg scored two more in the first six minutes of the second half before Guilford junior Colin Smith (Garden City, NY/Garden City) broke the scoring drought for the Quakers with a goal at the 4:46 mark in the third quarter. The LC men added to the final tote with a goal in the final minute of the third and out-scored Guilford 2-1 in the final period.
Three players scored multiple goals for the Hornets including Costello, Jeffries and junior Nick Sfakianos (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial). Season point leader Josh Paris (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock), the ODACs Player of the Week, handed out three of the Hornets four assists to secure the victory. Senior Mike Huck (Towson, MD/Loch Raven) and freshman Nick McCready (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) combined for five saves in goal to anchor the Lynchburg defense.
Smith and junior Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles [NY]) accounted for the Quakers scoring with one goal each. Keeper Jason Capen (New Baltimore, MI/University-Liggett) collected 16 saves in 60 minutes of work within the pipes. Guilford moves to 2-6 with the loss, 0-3 in league play.
