VIRGINIA WESLEYAN SCORES 19-5 ODAC MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD

Norfolk, VA (04/04/00) -- Freshman midfielder Jay Smith (Babylon, NY/Stony Brook) scored five goals and four assists in Virginia Wesleyan's 19-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse win over visiting Guilford Saturday afternoon.

The Marlins (3-4, 1-1 ODAC) jumped out to a 5-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back. After Guilford junior Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) pulled the Quakers (2-5, 0-2 ODAC) to within 6-3 with the second of four Quakers' extra-man scores, Virginia Wesleyan closed out the second quarter with three unanswered goals for a 9-3 halftime lead.

Junior midfielder Jack Lingo (Rehoboth, DE/Cape Henlopen) took part in three Marlins tallies in the opening two minutes of the third period with a goal and two assists.

Guilford sophomore goaltender Jason Capen (New Baltimore, MY/University-Liggett) made 13 saves in defeat, while Marlins sophomore netminder Jeff Trench (Rehoboth, DE/Cape Henlopen) recorded seven saves.

The Quakers visit league-rival Lynchburg Wednesday afternoon (4/5) at 4:00 pm.
