TIGERS TROUNCE GUILFORD, 24-4, IN ODAC MEN'S LACROSSE OPENER

Greensboro, NC (03/25/00) -- Freshman attackman Chris Lucas (Fairfax Station, Paul IV) scored five goals and an assist as 10th-ranked Hampden-Sydney coasted to a 24-4 win over host Guilford in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams.

Junior attackman John Neely (Annapolis, MD/Severn School) added a goal and four assists for the Tigers (5-3, 1-0 ODAC). He scored a goal and set up three others as Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Quakers (2-4, 0-1 ODAC) finally got on the board 1:19 into the second quarter on a Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) tally, but freshman attack Phillip Dick (Salem, VA/Salem) scored twice and had an assist in the Tigers' three-goal second quarter to give the guests a 10-2 halftime lead.

Hampden-Sydney came out firing in the third quarter as Lucas hit for three of his five goals and senior Mac Brown (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored twice in a nine-goal outburst. The Tigers won 10 of 12 third-quarter faceoffs and scored seven times in the first 7:11 of the period. After Guilford's Rusty Ollerhead (Timonium, MD/Calvert Hall) closed the third-quarter scoring, the Tigers ended the contest with five unanswered fourth-quarter tallies, including a pair from sophomore midfielder Roger Dael (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright).

Hampden-Sydney extended its lead in the season series to 15-9, and dealt the Quakers their 41st consecutive ODAC defeat, dating to March 27, 1993.
