ZENNARO'S OVERTIME TALLY GIVES VILLA JULIE MEN'S LACROSSE WIN OVER GUILFORD
Greensboro, NC (03/13/00) -- Freshman attackman Josh Zennaro (Towson, MD/Towson) scored an extra-man goal with 26 seconds left in the first overtime to give visiting Villa Julie an 11-10 men's lacrosse win over Guilford Monday afternoon. Zennaro tallied his fourth goal of the game from about five yards out after catching an errant Larry Dawson (White Hall, MD/North Harford) shot.
The Mustangs (3-1) held a 7-3 halftime lead, but had to rally from a 10-8 fourth-quarter deficit. Guilford (1-2) tallied seven of the first eight second-half goals and took two-goal lead on an Anthony Roman (New York, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) score with 12:20 left in regulation. Dawson started Villa Julie's comeback by assisting on Gregory Bardzik's (Cickeysville, MD/Dulaney) extra-man goal and later tied the tilt with 6:31 left off an assist by Zennaro.
Both teams had good scoring opportunities and extra-man advantages in the last six-and-a-half minutes of regulation and in overtime. Senior goaltender Kjeld Laurizen (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) made three of his 10 saves in the fourth quarter and came up with a big stop on Guilford's Colin Smith (Garden City, NY/Garden City) during a Quakers' extra-man advantage in overtime.
Zennaro finished with a game- and career-high six points on four goals and two assists. Dawson added three scores and an assist for the Mustangs. Junior Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) led the Quakers with three goals and two assists. Smith notched his third hat trick of the year in defeat.
Special teams played a big role in the Mustangs' second straight win in the season series. Villa Julie converted six of nine extra-man opportunities, while holding the Quakers to three goals in 13 tries. The Quakers went 1-9 on the extra-man in the second half and overtime.
