MARTINICH POWERS KENYON MEN'S LACROSSE TEAM PAST GUILFORD, 17-7
Greensboro, NC (03/06/00) -- Sophomore attackman Justin Martinich (Bay Shore, NY) scored seven goals and two assists to lead visiting Kenyon to a 17-7 men's lacrosse win over Guilford Monday afternoon. The Quakers (1-1) stayed with the Lords (1-0) for the first 40 minutes of the game before the deeper Kenyon squad pulled away and outscored the hosts 12-4 in the second half. The contest marked the Quakers' second in three days.
The Lords (1-0) held a narrow 5-3 halftime lead thanks to three Martinich tallies. Senior midfielder Kurt Cross (Bellevue, WA) set the tone for the second half by scoring a man-down goal eight seconds into the third quarter. Martinich followed four minutes later with his fourth score of the afternoon and the Lords scored a team goal with 9:06 left in the third to open an 8-3 lead.
After Guilford's John Gardner (Massena, NY/Massena) and Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NY/Skaneateles (NY)) scored to pull the hosts to within 8-5 late in the third quarter, Kenyon scored eight straight goals over the next five and a half minutes. Martinich tallied three goals and an assist during the spurt, which gave Kenyon an insurmountable 16-5 lead with 10:43 left in the game.
Kenyon sophomore Greg Tate (Durham, NC) scored three goals and senior Evan Bliss (Bethesda, MD) added four assists. Senior Derick Stowe (Great Falls, VA) and Cross finished with two goals apiece. Gardner and Gauthier each scored twice for Guilford. Quakers' netminder Jason Capen (New Baltimore, MI/University-Liggett) recorded a career-best 18 saves in defeat.
