
GUILFORD CLAIMS 19-6 WIN IN MEN'S LACROSSE OPENER
Greensboro, NC (03/04/00) -- Junior attackman Colin Smith (Garden City, NY/Garden City) scored a career-high six goals and four assists to lead Guilford to a 19-6 men's lacrosse victory over visiting Curry in both teams' season opener Saturday. Smith's 10 points match Guilford's sixth-best all-time single-game scoring effort and mark the Quakers' most individual points in a game since 1994.
Guilford junior Matt Synowiez (West End, NC/Easton (MD)) scored two goals and an assist to stake the hosts to a 4-1 lead after the opening quarter. Freshman attackman Ryan Shields (Saugus, MA) opened the second quarter with an extra-man goal to pull the Colonels (0-1) to within 4-2, but junior John Gardner (Massena, NY/Massena) scored the first his career-high three goals and Smith netted his first score of the day to give Guilford a 6-2 halftime advantage.
Smith had a hand in all seven Quakers' tallies in the third quarter with five goals and two assists. He started a 6-0 Guilford run over the final three minutes of the third quarter and the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Junior Jason Gauthier (Kernersville, NC/Skaneateles (NY)) scored his second man-up goal of the game and followed with a man-down score 1:28 later during the run.
Junior midfielder Anthony Roman (New York, NY/Mt. St. Michael's Academy), Guilford's starting goalie in 1998 and 1999, made his collegiate debut in the field and scored two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Joe Agruso (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) netted the Quakers' final goal in his first lacrosse game.
Guilford sophomore goalie Jason Capen (New Baltimore, MI/University-Liggett) made a career-high 10 saves in his first collegiate start and victory. Junior Brian Roth (Verona, NJ) stopped 14 shots for Curry.
