
WASHINGTON AND LEE CAPTURES RECORD 10TH ODAC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Raleigh, NC (4/27/99) -- Senior Rick Burrice (Louisville, KY/Trinity) took medalist honors with a one-under-par 143 to lead Washington and Lee University to its league-record 10th Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golf Championship at the River Ridge Golf Club Tuesday. Burrice shot a two-over-par 74 Tuesday and outdistanced Guilford College freshmen Andrew Biggadike (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Andy Eversole (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) by four strokes for the individual title.
The Generals captured their first ODAC golf crown since 1997 by shooting a 307 Tuesday to hold off defending league champion Guilford by three strokes. The Quakers shot the day's low round, 300, to finish with a 603. Hampden-Sydney placed third with a two-round 617. Roanoke (629) and Randolph-Macon (635) rounded out the top five.
Washington and Lee senior Geoff Cooper (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Hampden-Sydney junior John Mears (Birmingham, AL), the ODAC's 1999 Player of the Year, shared fourth place at 148. Randolph-Macon freshman John Rudolph (Churchville, MD) finished sixth with a 149. The top six individuals received All-Tournament recognition.
Also Tuesday, the league released its 1999 all-conference selections as chosen by the ODAC's nine head golf coaches prior to the start of the championship tournament. In addition to winning the ODAC's Player of the Year Award, Mears earned his third consecutive all-conference honor. Burrice received All-ODAC laurels for the second straight season. The remaining five all-conference players were first-time honorees. Washington and Lee coach Kevin Moore received the loop's coach of the year prize for the second time in three seasons.
