GUILFORD WINS THIRD STRAIGHT ODAC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Bluefield, VA (04/23/02) -- Guilford College sophomore Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central) shot one over-par 71 Tuesday and claimed medalist honors as his Quakers captured the 2002 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golf Championship at Fincastle Country Club.  Guilford fired a second-round 301 for a two-day total of 599, five strokes ahead of runner-up Washington and Lee's 604.
Guilford is the first team in league history to win three consecutive ODAC golf titles and has won six ODAC championships since joining the league in 1992.
Patterson carded Tuesday's low round and finished with a two-round 142.  Washington and Lee's Chip Campbell finished second with a two-day 147, two shots better than Guilford seniors Andrew Biggadike (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/Phillips (Brevard JC)).  The top six finishers received All-Tournament recognition.
Guilford's Nazareth earned his second straight ODAC Player of the Year Award and joined Patterson and Biggadike on the All-ODAC team.  Head coach Jack Jensen won his third straight ODAC Coach of the Year prize, which ties him with former Washington and Lee mentor Buck Leslie and former Lynchburg coach Bill Shellenberger as the league's only six-time coach of the year honorees.
The Quakers, ranked first in the latest Golfstat Division III Head-to-Head Standings and second in the Precept Division III Coaches' poll, await the announcement of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament field.  Nebraska Wesleyan will host this year's event at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, NE, May 16-19.  Guilford finished second at last year's national tournament by one stroke to Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
