CLARK LIFTS DUKE TO TOM O'BRIANT MEMORIAL TITLE
Greensboro, NC (10/02/01) -- Junior Brad Clark (Atlanta, GA/Marist) took medalist honors and broke a 17-year-old tournament record as Duke's 'B' team successfully defended its Tom O'Briant Memorial title Tuesday at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club. Clark shot a one-under-par 69 in Tuesday's second and final round for a two-day 137, two strokes better than the previous mark set in 1984 by Duke's Chuck Taylor.
Clark's record-setting performance helped the Blue Devils to a three-stroke victory over Oglethorpe, which posted Tuesday's lowest team score with a nine-over 289. Tournament host Guilford, which trailed Duke by one stroke after Monday's first round, finished six strokes off the pace with a two-day 588. The Savannah College of Art & Design (591) and nine-time NCAA Division III champion Methodist (592) rounded out the top-five teams.
Clark started the day one stroke ahead of Guilford senior Andrew Biggadike (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) in the individual standings, but ended up with a six-stroke victory when Biggadike shot a four-over 74 Tuesday. For the second straight day, Clark posted three birdies on the front nine holes. He birdied the 18th to finish one-under for the day and three-under for the tournament. Biggadike's second-place finish marked Guilford's best individual effort at the tournament since Keith King '85 finished second in 1982, the event's fourth year. Guilford senior Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/Phillips) had Tuesday's second-best score with an even-par 70 and finished in third place at 144.
Duke's David French (Columbus, OH/Arlington) placed eighth and teammate Rob Beasley (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford), last year's O'Briant Memorial medalist, finished 12th.
Oglethorpe placed four players among the top-14 individuals, including senior Robert Fink (Snellville, GA), one of four players in fourth place with 145. The Stormy Petrels entered the tournament ranked ninth in the September 27 Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) poll.
The O'Briant Memorial featured 18 teams, including 10 of the nation's top 25 Division III squads according to the September 27 GCAA poll. Guilford sits atop the rankings, just ahead of Greensboro (2nd), Methodist (3rd) and Averett (7th).
