
GUILFORD MOVES INTO SECOND PLACE IN NATIONAL GOLF POLL
Greensboro, NC (03/21/02) -- Guilford's men's golf team moved up to second place in the latest Precept Coaches Poll, released Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Quakers, who were ranked fifth in the initial spring poll January 22, have climbed one spot in each of the last three bi-weekly rankings.
Methodist holds the top spot for the fifth straight poll, followed by Guilford, Greensboro, Oglethorpe and Savannah College of Art & Design.
The Quakers placed second among 19 teams in the predominantly Division I field at the Treasure Coast Heroes/World Trade Center Heroes Classic March 15-16 in Port St. Lucie, FL. Tournament host St. John's (NY) won the team title by 22 strokes over Guilford. Johnson & Wales (FL), Navy and St. Louis rounded out the top five. UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State placed ninth and 12th, respectively, at the tournament. Guilford senior Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/St. Phillips) shot a two-over-par 146 in two rounds and placed sixth among the 107 individuals.
Entering Thursday's ODAC match at Washington and Lee, Nazareth led Guilford with a 71.94 stroke average through 17 rounds. He won the Uwharrie Point/Johnny Palmer Invitational Sept. 18-19 and has finished no lower than sixth in nine events this year. Nazareth is ranked second among Division III golfers according to the March 20 Golfstat rankings, and 44th among golfers from all divisions. Senior Andrew Biggadike (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) placed second among Guilford's leaders with a 74.59 stroke average, just ahead of sophomore Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central) (74.94). Guilford averaged 298.12 strokes per round as a team before Thursday's action.
Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers finished second in an eight-team ODAC match hosted by Washington and Lee Thursday (03/21). Nazareth tied for first individually with a 75, finished second on a scorecard tiebreaker. The Quakers compete in the 30th annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate April 5-7 in Camp Lejeune, NC.
